EVENT: Manila Design Week

Manila, Philippines. One of the places kind of overlooked in the map when we talk about design is Manila. What most isn’t aware of is the treasure trove of talents in this part of the world found inManila. If October is a beer month for the Germans, August is now declared design month.

One would ask, “What kind of design are we talking about? What’s the ‘design’ in design week?” When talking about design, it’s the multimedia one- we talk about graphics, we talk about art (painting, drawing, illustrations, etc), motion graphics, web, video, and so on.

Manila Design Week was created to gather established and up and coming international and local graphic designers to celebrate the emerging scene and also to bring awareness about Manila’s caliber to be the next hub for design not only in the Asian region, but the world as well. With its long colonial history and location, Manila is a melting pot of various cultures in a nice tropical, sunny package.

So, to honor the pool of talents not only in Manila but for the rest of the world in this global age, Manila Design Week 2010 brings together the best of design for its second year running.

This year’s theme centers on “Design Everyday”. As an official statement to accompany the theme: “Everyday, everything, everyone, everywhere there are great places to find good design.”

True enough, one need not to be artist to appreciate design. Design is indeed everywhere. Design is something useful. Design is something practical. Design is something that gives us a pleasant feeling and so on. Manila Design Week is made to spread the word about.

Here’s the week that went by:

DAY 1: MDW kicked off last August 7 with Graphika Manila’s 5th International Multimedia Design Conference at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia.

It was followed by Wall Lords Philippines on-the-spot mural/graffiti competition at The Collective, 7274 Malugay St. San Antonio Village, Makati City.

Day 1 wrapped up with a kick-off party at The Collective as well after the competition. The kick-off party fused some cool performances that mesh the rich vibe of rock, hip-hop and street sports gaining popular momentum in the region at the moment.

DAY 2: MDW Day 2 on August 10 was all about Cut and Paste at The Collective. Day 2 was all about a live graphics and motion graphics competition by the country’s top illustrators, graphic artists and motion graphic artists. Upbeat music from various DJs provided a groovy atmosphere in the event.
DAY 3: MDW Day 3 on August 11 tackled fashion with “What’s in your bag?” at the Fashion Walk, Greenbelt 5, Ayala Center, Makati City. Day 3 had a lot of Manila’s top fashion designers, fashionistas and socialites together sharing their stuff and of course, the event won’t be complete without an after party after 10pm.

DAY 4: MDW Day 4 on August 12 at Glorietta 5 had the students and artists take their stand in “Digital Voice”. The event wrapped up with a “Freedom Wall” and the launch of the website http://bigshift.ph.

DAY 5: MDW wrapped up in style last August 13 at the Cubao Expo (Cubao X) in Quezon City with a night of music and design tribute to Filipino 70s music in “Manila Sound Vision”. The little shops that line up the Expo area exhibited a vinyl-inspired mix of old and new fashions together with great music videos and live performances from top Filipino bands and DJs.

Overall, MDW was great and festive at its Filipino finest. To reiterate, design is indeed everyday and everyday’s a fiesta in Manila in sights and sounds and all that!
